Domain Names
There is a very funny article on Salon.com about all the non renewed domain names. Here is my favorite exert:
The fact that these domains were left fallow is even more intriguing than the fact that they were registered to begin with. Did the person who bought ILoveTracyVeryMuch.com realize that he (or she) actually loved Tracy only moderately?
There is also a great article in the MIT Boston Review about the loss of commons. Or in other words the commercialization of public space and ideas. I suggest you read both.
BBS
I had a long conversation with a friend on the phone tonight about being geeky. I was having fond memories of the BBS I started when I was 16. Those were really great times. There was this kid in Ohio that also ran a BBS using the same software (Hermes) on a PowerMac 6100. What a lucky bastard I thought he was. All I had was a Quadra 660av, although I loved that machine when I first got it. I remember the first months of running GTI BBS (named after my car) and the huge phone bills that my father recieved. All those phone calles to Alaska. Some where online, I can't find it now, is a listing of BBSs that used to be. I believe it was compiled from a list of FidoNet members? It was really fun to find GTI listed on there with the phone number. Todays RPGs just aren't the same.
