Time Slips

Scott Rosenberg mentions Henry Norr's recent firing from the S.F. Chronicle. I just hope it wasn't done because he participated in a protest.

The article reminded me of one of my first jobs.

I worked in a large printing company in Wisconsin as an Irix operator. We had these little slips to keep track of which jobs we worked on and for how long.

This was impossible. We worked on a per page basis as they came through the workflow. One page would be Playboy covers, the next some crappie catalog. If you had actually done what they wanted, your slip would be 20 pages long and look like this: 9:24 to 9:31 Playboy June back Cover; 9:31 to 9:40 Cheap clothes catalog, and on and on.

Instead at the end of the day you would count your pages and estimate your time on each, lumping it all together. I learned very quickly that this is a must or you'll spend half you twelve hour shift filling those damn things out.
