The Best Car
Erik's question of the day asks what's the best car ever. Unlike Erik, I am a car guy, so what I thought would be a fun and quick post has turned into an hours long search for the perfect car.
My choice in the end was the Volkswagen Beetle. Read on for some of the cars that I considered and the reasons why the beetle won out.
I started out with the usual suspects, Ferrari F50, Porsche 959, Bugatti EB110, and some others. All amazing cars, but lacking something that allows me to pick them. I then moved on to some great cars of a less famous stature, Maserati Tipo 64, Aston Martin DB6 Volante, and some more. Still did not satisfy my demands.
On to some american sports cars then, 1953-5 Corvette, '67 Ford Mustang Fastback, Shelby Cobra 424. Still I can't make a decision. Maybe I was being narrow minded, maybe the best car isn't a sports car?
How about the 90's Honda Civic? Inexpensive, easily moded, and a great body style. This is a great car, but it's still not the best. Feeling like I was close I then moved on to the Volkswagen Beetle (prior to '72). This is even cheaper, easier to modify and cooler looking. That's it, we have a winner.
The list of things that make this car a winner.
Body style is easily distinguishable from all others. No one will mistake you for driving a typical sedan.
Because if it's large production run (over 1 million) they are incredible cheap with an unbelievable amount of after-market parts.
They are still being made in Mexico which means you can actually buy an brand new engine that's stock. There are also companies that make new hotrod engines in case you want something with more pep.
Simple engine design making it easy for anyone with a little technical know how to work on.
Rear, air cooled engine.
Because of the engine's similar design to Porsche, you can actually just bolt in some Porsche engines and transmissions.

yo creo que el diseño de este auto es perfecto, impecable en sus lineas , y ni que decir del motor, es una prueba mas de la perfeccion en la ingenieria alemana, orgullosamente armado en mexico hasta este año.
