iChat
Apple released some new toys at their developer conference today. I'm not going to recap, you can find lots of info elsewhere. I do want to say that the new version of iChat rocks.
I'm not able to test out the video yet, but the audio works great. Even with my crap mic the sound quality was good. I talked to my sister in France for a good ten minutes without any noticeable lags or drops. I swear it was better than some of the phone connections we get.
This may actually replace the phone when it comes to talking to my family overseas. Something that I would have doubted. It will certainly be cheaper.
The key now is to convince my Mom that she needs iSight. Shouldn't be to hard, she does need her dose of Tom. As I told my sister, it's a communications device that gives you Tom on demand. What more could a mother want?

i was out walking the dog in the lane during the rest of your confab with mom...she loved it! what a bunch of mushy-my-little-boy stuff! (no doubt we'll all be getting those "communications devices" very soon!
