Earth Berm
Many years ago, before I was born, my maternal grandfather built an underground (earth berm) house in Door County Wisconsin. It's located in Whitefish Bay, a summer vacation spot. It's still there, but is no longer owned by our family. From what I can find out, it was bought 8 or 10 years ago and has remained empty ever since.
The house is incredibly neat. It was built by shaping it out of chicken wire and then spraying it with concrete. Made as two intersecting domes, it includes a huge open loft looking out two stories of glass (the only glass in the building) and a small dark hallway leading deep into the ground. This is all from memory, I've only been inside once as a child. I haven't even seen it from a far for about 10 years.
The reason I bring it up? Well I was hoping to find some info online about it. I was thinking that someone might have made a site about earth berm housing and perhaps mentioned it. I can't find a single thing.
I guess the internet doesn't have all the answers.
it is the coolest damn house ever. i've dreamed for years of buying it back (i bet it would be cheap, respectively in DC) and spending summers there, painting. and sharing it, of course, with my sibs.

Yeah it's definitely cool. I would love for someone in the family to have it. It's a shame that it has been left unused for so long.

That house that your maternal grandfather built sounds amazing. It would be very valuable for you to write down eveything you recall about it, even if that is not much and to get all others in your family and acquaintance who might remember anything about it to do the same. Perhaps you or the others could even do drawings. This is valuable information that will become more andmore important as we are forced to live in a more ecologically sensible manner. I bet the current owner would let you in to see it for old times sake if you contacted him or her and asked!
