Kill the Smokers!
If you live in California, there's now one more place you can't smoke. The beach. It's not a state law, but most of the beaches here are on their way to banning it. The problem they say? Too many butts left on the beach. Smoking is such an easy target, but they're missing this one big time. Unless I'm an idiot, I'm pretty sure they already have a law to stop people from leaving their butts on the beach, it's called littering. This is why it's so hard for the government to get anything worthwhile done. They're too busy pandering to nonsense like this. Enforce the laws you have, don't make new ones just because you haven't spent any money enforcing the first one. But of course, the problem isn't really the litter, it's that people hate smoking, otherwise they would be banning soda and all the cans littering the beach.
I know this is a touchy subject. I'm not arguing the right for someone to inhale carcinogens into their lungs nor the fact that they're going to have to exhale. But I should also have the right to not inhale that crap. I haven't a clue how to decide on a delimiter, but when I can't even walk outside of my own apartment without smelling cigarette smoke, things are getting pretty bad.
I know what someone would say. "I can't smoke indoors, I can't smoke outdoors, what's next?" I don't have the answer. As I said, it's a touchy subject. But I do know that there's a simple matter of courtesy involved. If you're standing or sitting within several yards of various groups of people, chances are that several of them would rather not be around cigarette smoke. If you're near a large group of people, just give it a break for a little while. Choosing to not light up until you're in a more sparse area won't kill you--unlike the actual cigarette that you're craving.

This has nothing to do with being uncomfortable around smoke (but come on, the beach? There's no way smoke is making it more than two feet before it dissipates). It has to do with the government dealing with a problem (litter) in a completely ridiculous way. Instead of taking on the problem as a whole, it's passing a law that will only fix part of it, while at the same time removing the rights of a group of people. And there's already a law to take care of all of it.
This isn't pro / anti smoking thing. This is government being stupid and not seeing the big picture.
Love the site btw. Looks great.

Tommy - sorry, not true. If you manage to get downwind of a smoker, you're gonna smell it. Never underestimate the power of cigarette smoke smell to survive the most unlikely of conditions.
You may notice that I did not disagree with the point of the government making a boneheaded decision. Why aren't they enforcing the laws they already have instead of inventing new ones?
What I'm getting at is a message to smokers...I'd be much more respectful of their right to smoke if they'd be more respectful about doing so in crowded areas.

Ok, I'll give that you may be able to smell it. I meant simply that you won't have smoke blowing in your face.
Still I say that the guy with that bad BO smells bad and bothers me, but we don't have any laws that make you shower.
We're never going to agree on this, but I'm glad you understand my point. This isn't the only time they have passed laws when current laws would work fine if they enforced them.
